How Many Containers Are Lost At Sea?

This is a question that is often asked.

A figure often quoted is “about 10’000 containers lost per year”.

The World Shipping Council whose members make up 90% of the world’s container ship capacity polled its members in 2014 to get an accurate answer.

Turns out that the figure is closer to 700 lost annually and if we include catastrophic events (think of MV Rena and MV MOL Comfort), this figure rises to over 2’500.

A lot but still a lot less than the 10’000 figure.

Whatever the number, they represent a danger to world shipping.
